pearls myths & truths
The market hasn't been honest ❕
Myth 1) Can freshwater pearls be worn every day without getting ruined?
Yes — and that's exactly the point. AAA grade freshwater pearls are designed for daily wear — unisex, effortless, and just as at home on a casual Tuesday as they are layered with your finest pieces. No occasion required. No dress code. Just wear it.
Unlike costume pearl jewelry or synthetic pearl alternatives, O ZEY genuine cultured freshwater pearls have a thick nacre layer built up over years of natural growth. That nacre is what gives them their luster — and it's durable enough for everyday use when cared for properly.
myth 2) cultured pearls aren't real pearls
The freshwater pearls we source are 100% genuine and AAA grade.
It’s cultivated using improved freshwater pearl farming techniques that allow a single mussel to produce a bigger, rounder, and more visually consistent pearl, often in the 10mm+ range. Because of this, Edison pearls tend to have a smoother surface, richer glow, and more uniform shape, making them closer in appearance to saltwater pearls while still being freshwater.
Nearly all pearls today are cultured—meaning a skilled hand initiates the process that nature completes. It's a natural collaboration, not an artificial substitute.
MYTH 3) Freshwater Pearl v.s Other Ones
Luxury pearl brands — Mikimoto, Tahitian, South Sea — have built decades of positioning around saltwater pearls. But here's what most people don't know.
Freshwater pearls are solid nacre all the way through. Saltwater pearls are grown around a bead nucleus with a thin nacre coating over the top, which means freshwater pearls are actually more durable — more nacre, less risk of chipping, longer lasting luster.
AAA grade freshwater pearls sit at the top of the freshwater grading scale. They're selected for the same five criteria as any luxury pearl — luster, surface, nacre thickness, shape and size. The difference is the origin story the industry decided to sell alongside them.
At O ZEY we source directly from Zhuji, the Pearl Capital of the world, developing culturing techniques that allowed freshwater mussels to produce multiple pearls per harvest cycle, revolutionizing global pearl supply and making genuine cultured pearl accessible beyond the ultra-luxury market for the first time.
Real pearl. Honest price. No mythology required.
MYTH 4) Will freshwater pearl jewelry tarnish or turn yellow?
The pearl itself won't tarnish — pearls don't oxidize the way metal does. But they can yellow over time, and that's almost always a care issue, not a quality issue.
The main causes of pearl yellowing are chemicals — perfume, moisturizer, hairspray, sunscreen — and improper storage. Pearls are organic and their nacre responds to the environment around them. left in an airtight box or exposed to chemicals regularly, the nacre slowly dehydrates and discolors.
The tarnishing you might see is usually the metal setting, not the pearl itself. 925 sterling silver naturally oxidizes over time. a gentle polish on the metal keeps everything looking clean.
Three habits that prevent yellowing entirely:
Put pearls on last — after every product, every time. this is the single most important pearl care habit.
Wipe down after wearing — a soft dry cloth takes thirty seconds and removes everything before it settles.
Store in the O ZEY box — separately from your other jewelry. The O ZEY pouch and drawer box were designed specifically for this. Breathable, protective, and built to keep your pearl's nacre healthy between wears. Not an airtight plastic bag. Not a tangled jewelry drawer. A proper home.
